Why a hang tab changes where your product can be sold
Shelf space in pharmacy, convenience and gift retail is scarce, but peg hook space is comparatively plentiful. A lip balm carton with a hanging tab can be merchandised on a clip strip at the checkout, on a slatwall in a gift store or on a pegboard in a pharmacy aisle, none of which are available to a plain tuck end box.
The tab itself is die-cut from the same board as the carton, so there is no separate plastic hook to source, attach or dispose of. That keeps the pack in a single material stream and removes an assembly step from your packing line.
What has to be right is the load. A tab that tears through under the weight of the pack is worse than no tab at all, because the product ends up on the floor of the store. Tab geometry, board weight and reinforcement all change with the number of tubes the carton holds, and that is where most of the design work goes.
Hanging tab styles
Four cuts cover almost every retail fixture. Which one you need is usually dictated by the retailer rather than by preference.
Euro slot
The inverted keyhole shape used across European and much of US retail. Slides onto a standard hook and resists sliding off sideways.
Round hole
A simple circular punch. Cheapest to cut and widely accepted, but offers less resistance to lifting off the hook.
Delta cut
A triangular slit that opens as the hook passes through. Leaves the panel visually intact when the pack sits on a shelf instead.
Extended header tab
An additional flap above the carton body carrying the hole, giving extra printed area for brand or range messaging.
Reinforced tab
A folded double thickness of board around the hole. Used on multipacks and anything above a light single-tube weight.
Applied plastic tab
A self-adhesive hook strip fitted after packing. Available, but it breaks the single-material advantage of a die-cut tab.
Tab strength, board weight and structure
A single 0.15 oz lip balm stick in a carton weighs very little, and a well-placed euro slot in 18pt board will hold it through a full retail cycle. A four-tube multipack is a different problem: the same tab in the same board will start to elongate around the hook within days, and will eventually tear.
The fixes are a heavier board, a reinforced double-thickness tab, or a wider tab that spreads the load across more of the panel. Usually it is a combination. We work the tab against the filled weight you tell us, so send the weight of the packed carton rather than the weight of the empty box.
The carton body itself is normally a straight tuck end or a seal end, with the tab formed as part of the top panel or as an extension above it. Where the pack holds more than two tubes, an auto-bottom base is worth having so the carton cannot open downward under its own weight. Windows and shelf visibility
A hanging pack is seen from the front only, and at eye level or above. That makes the front panel the entire piece of communication, and a window is the most direct way to let the product itself do the work. Shoppers reaching for a tinted balm want to see the shade.
Windows are die-cut and can be left open or covered with a clear film patch. On a hanging pack a film patch is worth the extra cost: an open window on a peg hook collects dust and lets the tube shift, and the film stiffens a panel that has just had a large hole cut in it.
Where a window is not appropriate, the same job can be done with a printed swatch of the actual shade on the front panel. It costs nothing extra and is easier to keep accurate across a range than a photograph.
Dimensions and fixture compatibility
Peg fixtures set constraints that a shelf does not. These are the measurements to have before a hanging pack is designed.
- Filled carton length, width and depth, so the pack clears the hook in front of it
- Total packed weight, which determines tab geometry and board weight
- Hook diameter used by the retailer, typically between 3 and 6 mm
- Distance from the top of the tab to the top of the printed panel
- Whether the retailer requires a specific tab type in their packaging guide
- Whether a barcode has to appear in a fixed position for shelf scanning

Board and printing choices
Kraft board reads honestly for natural and low-waste ranges, and the brown surface photographs well against the bright colours common in lip care. It does, however, mute every printed colour, so a shade range printed on kraft will look more uniform than it does on white board.
Coated white board is the choice when the shade differences between products have to be obvious at arm's length on a peg. It also supports the fine gradients that tinted balm ranges tend to use.
On weight: 18pt handles a single tube, 20pt to 24pt suits two or more, and E-flute corrugated is available where the pack is unusually large or is being shipped loose. The differences between these stocks in practice are set out in the overview of board grades and thicknesses.
Designing for a peg hook
Two rules dominate. First, the top inch of the front panel is partly obscured by the hook and the pack in front of it, so nothing critical belongs there. Second, hanging packs are viewed from below when they sit above eye height, which foreshortens the panel and makes horizontal type harder to read than vertical type.
Keep the tab area clear of dense ink where the die cuts, as heavy ink coverage on a cut edge tends to crack. Leave a barcode area of at least 1.5 inches wide on a panel that stays flat, and never let it cross a crease.

Quality control, delivery and material handling
Beyond the usual colour and dimension checks, hanging cartons get a tab inspection: the die cut is measured for position and cleanliness, and sample packs are hung at packed weight to confirm the tab holds without deforming. A ragged tab cut is visible to a shopper at arm's length, so cut quality is checked rather than assumed.

Because the tab is board rather than an applied plastic hook, the finished pack stays in one material stream at disposal, assuming the finish chosen does not add a laminate. A varnish rather than a laminate keeps that simpler.

How much weight will a die-cut hang tab hold?
It depends entirely on board weight, tab geometry and whether the tab is reinforced. A single lip balm stick in 18pt board is comfortable. A four-tube pack in the same board is not. Send us the packed weight and we will specify a tab that carries it, and load-test a sample if you want the evidence before printing.
Which tab shape should I choose?
If your retailer publishes a packaging specification, follow it, because rejection at goods-in is expensive. Failing that, a euro slot is the safest default: it fits standard hooks and resists being knocked off sideways. A round hole is cheaper to cut but slips off more easily.
Can I have both a hang tab and a window?
Yes, and it is a common combination. The one caution is that a large window plus a tab removes a lot of material from the same panel, which weakens it. In that case we either add a clear film patch to stiffen the window or move to a heavier board.
Does the tab have to be at the top of the box?
Almost always, yes, because the pack hangs vertically and the balance point sits over the hook. A tab positioned off-centre or on a side panel makes the pack hang crooked, which looks careless on a full peg and encourages shoppers to reach past it.
Will a hang tab work on kraft board?
Yes. Kraft is perfectly capable structurally. The consideration is visual rather than physical: the die-cut edge of a kraft tab shows raw brown fibre, which suits a natural range and looks unfinished on a glossy one.
Do I need a separate SKU for hanging and shelf versions?
You need a separate carton, since the die line differs, but many brands run the hanging version as the only version. A delta cut is worth considering here, because it leaves the panel looking uninterrupted when the pack sits on a shelf and still opens for a hook.
Can you pack to a retailer case count?
Yes. Tell us the required units per case, the case dimensions if specified, and any pallet pattern in the retailer guide. It is far easier to build that into the production plan than to repack finished stock afterwards.
Where should the barcode go on a hanging pack?
On a flat panel, at least 1.5 inches wide, not crossing a crease and not on the tab. Scanners struggle with a barcode that sits over a fold. If the pack is small, the back panel is usually the only place it fits cleanly.
Is an adhesive plastic hook ever a better option?
It has one advantage: you can add it to an existing carton without a new die. Against that, it adds an assembly step, a plastic component and a second material to the disposal route, and it can peel in a warm store. For a new design, a die-cut tab is the cleaner answer.
How do hanging packs perform in shipping?
They ship flat like any folding carton, so transit to you is straightforward. The consideration is after filling: packed hanging cartons should be cased upright so the tabs are not crushed, and the case count should reflect that. Tell us how you case-pack and we will allow for it.
Can the tab area carry printed branding?
Yes, and an extended header tab exists specifically to give you that space. It sits above the carton body, carries the hole, and gives you an extra printed area that is visible above the pack in front on a full peg.
